‘The Americans’, the popular drama series about two Russian spies living in the United States, is getting a Korean remake. The series, which became a fan favorite at the time of its release, will star Lee Byung Hun and Han Ji Min.
‘The Americans’ Korean remake confirmed
According to Deadline, Lee Byun Hun and Han Ji Min are ready for a new project. The production process of the series has already started. Eric Schrier, head of international local originals, mentioned that when the idea first came up he was “skeptical” about it and wasn’t sure how a Korean remake of such a show would fare. The Hollywood Reporter also says that Schrier had a lot to consider before taking on the project. He shared, “I was the guy who developed The Americans. I’m still very close with Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, the creators of the originals, so I wasn’t so sure about this idea because it’s so near and dear to my heart.”He detailed how the Korean team for the remake project were the ones who inspired the project the most. “It was really the passion of our Korean team that moved me – and I saw that, as Korea is still divided, this could be a very culturally relevant story for the local audience, which is always a top priority for our local original content.”

The show will be set in the 1990s, when reforms were being made in the country, and when democratization and cultural modernization spread across the country. The show will focus on a Korean family hiding a secret that could lead to their ultimate demise if it ever comes out.Sent to South Korea in disguise, two North Korean spies build a life to infiltrate the country and its government from the inside. The upcoming series will be directed by Ahn Gilho, best known for ‘The Glory’.
