The action comedy and crime thriller ‘City Hunter’ will have its sequel. Slated for a worldwide release in 2027, Suzuki Ryohei and Morita Misato’s ‘City Hunter 2’ will return.Suzuki Ryohei returns as protagonist Ryo Saeba, while Morita Misato reprises her role as partner Kaori Makimura. Kimura Fumino joins the cast as sharp-tongued detective Saeko Nogami.

Suzuki plays Ryo Saeba, a Shinjuku-based operative who takes on dangerous jobs from the criminal underworld. He brings exceptional marksmanship and analytical intelligence to every mission, but is undone by the presence of attractive women.The Netflix film is directed by Shiraki Keiichiro, with a screenplay by Junpei Yamaoka. The film is based on the manga by Hojo Tsukasa.
The production of the film ‘City Hunter 2’ is underway
According to Variety , Netflix Japan’s director of live-action creative Takahashi Shinichi highlighted the project’s broader significance for the streamer’s Japanese output. “After the overwhelming response to the previous film, we are delighted to bring the first sequel to a film on Netflix in Japan,” he said. “Cooler than ever, goofier than ever and more emotional than ever – ‘City Hunter 2’ is on its way.“
Influence of ‘City Hunter’
The first film debuted at number one on Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English Movies) from April 22-28, 2024 and reached the top 10 in 32 countries, including Japan, France, South Korea, Hong Kong and Brazil. The publication also resulted in a significant increase in sales of Hojo’s original manga in both physical and digital editions. The manga has accumulated sales of over 50 million copies worldwide since its original publication.
