‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari recently revealed that if he had the opportunity to direct a big budget film, it would be his ideal actors. Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt and Sai Pallavi.In an interaction at the Red Lorry Film Festival, the director said, “I have many names on my wish list, but right now, my wish list is Deepika, Alia, Sai Pallavi. I hope Deepika, Alia, Sai Pallavi are listening. I’m putting it out into the universe.”
The director questions the gender imbalance big budget movies
Ashwiny also spoke about the gender dynamics within the film industry: “Why can’t a woman make a Rs 100 crore or Rs 1 billion film, why should only a male director do it? I have one at home (her director husband, Nitesh Tiwari, famous for ‘Dangal’ and the next, ‘Ramayana’) but still.”
The filmmaker says the studio’s support is crucial
Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari explained that undertaking a massive project requires more than creative ideas. According to him, the strong support of the production studios is essential.Speaking about the process, he said: “I put the platform (about wanting to make a €1 billion film) out in the universe because you need some sort of budget and everything is there.”He added: “I’ll have an idea today, but if the studio is putting money into it, then they also have to have faith in it and a long-term plan for it. So it’s a two-way process.” The director emphasized that big projects require trust between filmmakers and studios.
Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari expresses interest in action films
Apart from her dream casting, Ashwiny also revealed that she is looking forward to exploring the action genre in the future.He said, “I want to do action films. There has to be some feeling.”The filmmaker said that he likes to tell stories based on action. Some of his favorite films include the animated franchise The Incredibles, the superhero saga Spider-Man and the classic Hindi film Shahenshah.
The director praises Geetu Mohandas’ Toxic and talks about audience trends
Ashwiny also expressed excitement for Geetu Mohandas’ Indian film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups starring Yash.He said, “I am very very happy that Geetu is doing such a film and also to be an inspiration for more storytellers.” He also added, “Also, I think it’s faith and trust in the author, so it doesn’t matter (what genre). I always feel that a good storyteller will always be a good storyteller, whether the budgets go up or stay the same.”Ashwiny also praised Yash’s support for the project. He said, “He said to Yash for supporting Geetu, and also for making sure that it will be the right kind of window for a film like this, so I think it’s great.”The filmmaker revealed that he watches them in theaters to understand the audience’s reactions. He mentions that he has recently seen Dhurandhar for this reason. He explained: “For me it was a market study to see what excites the audience and that is very important for us.” Ashwiny also shared that he is planning to watch the movie ‘Dhurandhar 2’ on March 19th. His previous directorial was the TV series ‘Faadu: A Love Story’.
