Legendary singer Asha Bhosle He was cremated with full state honors at the Shivaji Park Crematorium on Monday, as a sea of mourners gathered to bid farewell to the iconic voice that defined generations for more than eight decades.Wrapped in the tricolour, Asha Bhosle — popularly known as Asha Tai — fired a salute before being cremated by the Mumbai Police. His last rites were performed by his son Anand, amidst chants, prayers and a very emotional atmosphere.Earlier, his mortal remains were kept at his residence in Lower Parel for public homage. Long lines of admirers could be seen outside, fans folding their hands, offering flowers and remembering the singer in tears.
Film fraternity, political leaders are numerous
Several prominent faces from the film industry paid floral tributes at the crematorium, including Aamir Khan, Vicky KaushalVivek Oberoi, Padmini Kolhapure and Jackie Shroff. Ranveer Singh and the cast Riteish Deshmukh had earlier visited his residence to offer his condolences.Veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and director Ramesh Sippy were also among those who came to pay their respects, along with singers Shaan and Anup Jalota.From the political front, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray were present. Leaders including Supriya Sule and Aaditya Thackeray also paid their respects.Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and state minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha among other dignitaries were present.
A musical farewell and personal memories
In a poignant tribute, singers Shaan and Sudesh Bhosale performed a musical tribute minutes before the last rites.Veteran actress Helen paid her last respects, while Poonam Dhillon was seen breaking down as she consoled the grieving family. Asha Bhosle’s granddaughter Zanai Bhosle also got emotional while interacting with the visitors.Composer Uttam Singh remembered him as a warm and generous human being. Recalling a night recording session, “it was around 1:30 p.m. When we were leaving, he asked us to wait, went inside, he cooked chicken and rice, and insisted we eat before leaving. He was that person.”
A legacy that will resonate forever
One of the most influential voices in Indian music, Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday after being admitted to Breach Candy Hospital a day earlier. Maharashtra culture minister Ashish Shelar confirmed the news.In a career spanning decades, he received numerous awards, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
