Aamir Khan He is often called a “perfectionist” because of his choice of roles and the dedication he puts into every film. The actor opened up about his career so far at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Speaking to the audience, he revisited some of his films and shared candid insights and little-known anecdotes from his career.Discussing how his approach to cinema has evolved over time, Aamir said, “After Lagaan, I started doing one film at a time; before that, my producers and directors weren’t ready to work like that. The way I judge my performances is what I have in my mind and the mind of the character, what I’ve been able to bring to the audience, and then I’ve been able to be consistent.”Reflecting on her role in ‘Raja Hindustani’, she admitted that the character was flawed but felt happy with her portrayal. “Raja Hindustani was a good performance; it was a bit MCP, but the performance was consistent. I also really enjoyed doing Secret Superstar. In real life, I am very disciplined; my mother has brought me up in a certain way, so I never misbehave. In that film, I could do whatever I wanted, so I really enjoyed it,” he shared.He also revived Talaash, the 2012 film in which he acted Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor Khanhighlighting what he believes alienated the film to a wider audience. “Talaash got a good response, but we made a mistake in that film, it could have been done better, but our marketing was wrong. We marketed the film as a thriller; we should have marketed it as a supernatural thriller. We should have prepared the audience to expect the climax, which was a surprise; more audiences would have liked the film if we had got the film right. You can go wrong at any stage. Talaash was a good movie, very well shot, great performances, but I think we went wrong with the marketing”.During the session, an audience member brought up Delhi Belly, prompting Aamir to tell a humorous story about how he got involved with the film. “I was dying to do Delhi Belly, I wanted to play the photographer. It was a strange thing that happened with that film. I was at home at night, and Kiran and I had to go out somewhere. I had some important emails to answer so I told him to give me 15 minutes. I was doing my work at the desktop, and he was waiting. On my desk, there were a bunch of scripts I hadn’t read. He picked up the first, passed through it, picked up the second, the third, and suddenly he started laughing. I asked him what was so funny, and he was literally rolling on the floor laughing. I thought it was a good script. I finished the email, sat down with him and we read the entire script; we were cracking up.”He continued, “Later, we checked the first page for the person’s name. Two people from LA, Akshat and Jim, were students. I called them and asked if we could meet. They said they had been in Mumbai for the last three months trying to meet me, and had returned to LA the day before without meeting me. I asked them how they could come back. Give the script to my house cook and tell the cook to keep it in my studio. That’s what they did, and I had no idea,” Aamir recalled.
