New Delhi: A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, was killed on Sunday after his team was attacked by armed robbers as they were returning from a match, according to the Ghana Football Association. The incident shocked the country’s football community and left his club and teammates devastated.The club, Bericham Chelsea FC, said in a statement that “masked men armed with guns and assault rifles” fired at the team bus and forced the players to hide in the bushes.

The attack reportedly took place at around 10:30pm local time along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana.During the chaos, Dominic Frimpong was hit by bullets. He was taken to a hospital but later died during treatment, police said. The violent robbery also affected others, including the 52-year-old victim. “Another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was also robbed of 4,500.00 cedis ($408),” police said in a statement.Officials confirmed the incident and described it as a criminal assault involving loss of life and theft. The Ghana Football Association described the incident as “regrettable” and “a huge loss not only to Chelsea but also to Ghanaian football as a whole”.Frimpong, at just 20 years old, was seen as a rising talent in Ghanaian football. “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” he said in a statement.He joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Adwana Stars FC earlier this year and has already made 13 appearances, scoring two goals. His sudden death has left the local football community in mourning after a young career cut short in a violent and unexpected tragedy.
