The story and setting of ‘Pallichattambi’
‘Pallichattambi’ is a period drama set in the high hills of Kerala in the late 1950s. It revolves around migrant farming communities and tells the story of an extraordinary ‘chattambi’ (ruffian) of the renaissance era.
The director’s view
Director Dijo Jose Antony explained the importance of the title. He told The New Indian Express, “Pallichattambi is not just a name. It is more than a title or an identity. In the 1950s and 60s, terms like ‘chattambi’ were used to describe someone who had influence or authority in a place. Today, we can compare it to a local strongman.“He admitted that balancing period authenticity with commercial elements was challenging but rewarding.
