When the film ‘Satya’ completed 27 years and re-released in theatres, Varma said why he portrayed these gangsters in a vulnerable and human way. I thought it was terrible. A gangster having a fever was not something I thought of. See, all these keep adding up in my films. A woman journalist was one of the only ones who met Dawood Ibrahim. He had a cold once. Another guy told me, you are afraid of Dawood because he is on the phone, he is an unknown man. But if you knew that he stays in Bandra, you wouldn’t be afraid of him. He might have the same power, but you would think, ‘aree idhar hi rehta hai’,” laughed the director.

The filmmaker also recalled that many people told him not to do ‘Satya’ because they thought it would upset the underworld. However, the opposite happened to Varma. “Many people warned me not to do this. I’m not saying anyone is bad. I’m doing a film. So they were happy. I showed the human side of it. In fact, at that time I was the only one who didn’t get an extortion call because of Satya. They were like ‘usko chhodo’.
