The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) finds itself at a crossroads, projecting stability on the cricketing front while dealing with growing uncertainty in its administration. The key decisions taken during the fourth meeting of the board of directors in Dhaka on Saturday indicate a dual narrative of long-term planning and immediate crisis management.Continuity of leadership and coaching signals the sustainability of cricketing.In a major move, the BCB has confirmed its leadership structure across all formats. Mehdi Hasan Miraz will continue as Bangladesh’s ODI captain until the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, while Liton Das will lead the T20 team until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028.To strengthen the leadership depth, Najamul Hussain Shanto and Saif Hasan have been named vice-captains for ODIs and T20Is respectively. These decisions reflect the Board’s intention to provide continuity and clarity in leadership during an important phase for Bangladesh cricket.The board also strengthened its coaching setup by appointing former spinner Mohammad Rafiq as a specialist spin bowling coach and consultant for a period of one year. A pioneer of Bangladesh cricket, Rafiq is expected to play a key role in nurturing spin talent at all levels.Development is already visible on the field under Mehdi, with Bangladesh winning notable series against the West Indies in 2025 and Pakistan earlier this year.Apart from team matters, the BCB approved a new human resource policy aimed at improving transparency and efficiency. It also launched two digital platforms, the Player Data App and the Cloud Server App, to enhance performance analysis and data-driven decision-making.The administrative crisis is deepening with the wave of resignations.However, these forward-looking moves come amid growing instability within the board. Three directors: Sanian Tanim, Mehrab Alam, and Fayyazur Rehman resigned on Saturday, taking the total number of departures from the current board to six.His ouster follows the recent resignation of Yasir Muhammad Faisal Ashiq, raising concerns of internal dissension. Earlier, Amjad Hussain and Ishtiaq Siddiqui also resigned due to personal reasons.The inquiry committee set up by the BCB is expected to submit its report by April 9, after which the government will decide on the board’s future. With speculation mounting that the board could be disbanded, an ad hoc committee, possibly headed by a former Bangladesh captain, is being set up as an emergency.The BBC is keen to re-establish ties with the BCCI.Amidst the uncertainty, BCB is also trying to rebuild the strained relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Relations between the two boards soured after Bangladesh pulled out of the T20 World Cup due to security concerns.The situation worsened after Mustafizur Rahman’s participation in the IPL became controversial, which eventually led to Bangladesh being included in the tournament instead of Scotland.The fallout has spilled over into bilateral cricket, with Bangladesh Women’s tour of India canceled and India’s white-ball schedule against Bangladesh in September in doubt.In an attempt to restore normalcy, the BCB has approached the BCCI proposing renewed engagements and exchange programmes. Chairman of Cricket Operations Nazmul Abedin expressed hope of receiving a reply soon, terming it as part of routine communication between cricket boards.
