Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal has commented on the possibility of expanding the tournament, saying that while there is demand for more matches, the biggest challenge is the packed international cricket calendar. In a chat with the Financial Times, Dhumal explained that the growth of the IPL, from the current 74 matches to a possible 84 or 94-game season, is largely dependent on finding additional space in the global schedule.Dhumal highlighted that the current Future Tours Program (FTP), which governs international fixtures, leaves little room for expansion.“We really need a big window to take the IPL from 74 to 94 matches,” he said.Currently, the tournament runs in a limited window from mid-March to late May. Extension beyond this period is not possible due to onset of monsoon in some parts of India. He also pointed out that increasing the number of matches within the current window would lead to more double-headers, something that some broadcasters are not in favor of.“If we try to extend the matches in the current window, we will have more double-headers. It does not work well for the broadcasters. We have to consider their interests as well.”A change from two-way cricket could open doors.Dhumal suggested that the changing trends in world cricket could eventually pave the way for the expansion of the IPL. He noted the decline in interest in bilateral series, with several cricket boards starting their own franchise leagues.Referring to tournaments like The Hundred, Big Bash League, ILT20, SA20 and Caribbean Premier League, he said, “There is definitely less interest in some bilateral games. That is why countries are coming up with their own leagues.”According to Dhumal, if this trend continues, cricket boards may opt for fewer two-way series or series that are more commercially viable, which would create room for tournaments like the IPL to grow.“If that’s the trend, then every country wants less bilaterals … and then there’s room to widen the IPL window,” he explained.Equilibrium growth and the global calendarDespite the immense popularity and financial power of the IPL, Dhumal emphasized the importance of collaboration with other cricket boards. He said that we are looking forward to further discussions with all countries and partners.IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal looks to expand the IPL schedule from 72 to 94 after the 2027 cycle, “It makes sense, and it is already locked till 2027.” But when they plan beyond 2027, we will discuss. IPL is not only giving importance to India and Indian players. It is adding value to world cricket in a big way. So all these players will want more.Hopefully when we decide the next cycle, we will be able to carve out a big window so that we can extend it beyond 74,” Irwin said.
