Tripura has approved a major expansion of its early childhood education network by approving the introduction of pre-primary units in 450 government schools from the academic session 2026-27. The decision accelerates the state’s efforts to bring basic education into the formal school system.The latest initiative will take the total number of pre-primary facilities in government schools to 695. The scale of growth is remarkable when seen against the baseline, Tripura had only nine such institutions till 2018. Since then, 236 units have been added, but the new rollout significantly accelerates that pace.With about 4,800 schools across the state, officials expect the expansion to dramatically increase access to early education, especially in remote and underserved areas.According to media reports, schools have also been asked to prepare for nursery admissions from the upcoming academic session, which requires coordination between administrators, teachers, school management committees, parents and local bodies.
The NEP framework is driving the shift.
This expansion is laid out in the National Education Policy (NEP), which places early childhood care and education at the heart of long-term learning outcomes. Officials indicated that the initiative is designed not only to strengthen basic skills but also to address the enrollment gap in government schools.Bringing children into the school system at an early stage is expected to improve retention and lead to more stable academic progress.
A monitoring mechanism has been devised.
Management accountability is included in the plan. DEOs are mandated to provide full support to identified schools and submit regular progress reports on implementation.The education department has also directed schools to immediately report any operational problems to district authorities, hinting at a strict monitoring structure to prevent delays.

Tripura’s move also signals a structural shift in the approach it is taking to early education learning in relation to the wider school system. Pre-primary education is being mainstreamed in a big way.The success of this rollout will depend on how it is implemented, but what is clear is that the state intends to reshape the schooling admissions landscape.
