Aditya Uppal on tough questioning
A key scene for his character is a tough Q&A where Omar tortures Hamza. On Faridoon Shahryar’s podcast, Aditya talked about it, “I was not aware of the sequence. When the script arrived, it mentioned that I was locked up and interrogated. Sometimes the scenes can be deceiving: you read the lines and imagine doing it a certain way, but when you get to the set, with the atmosphere and everything, you realize there’s a lot of technicality involved. This scene involved a lot of technical aspects, and I had to be aware of several things. The first thing was that I was very careful not to hurt Ranvee.’
Aditya Uppal in real hits
Aditya said that he got real hits from Ranveer on the set and explained how he teamed up with the action team to pull it off safely and realistically. He said, “There was no other action scene for me except this one, so with Aejaz bhai, who was the action director, I had to work out how it would play out: how much I could hit and what areas were safe so that he wouldn’t really get hurt. But my first two or three shots were cut, when you’re new to action you tend to be very careful. So Mr. Aditya said to me, ‘You have to go all out, you really have to hit it.’ Ranveer bhai also said, “Aditya, hit me hard, go ahead.” I told him I might not be able to do it in one shot.’Uppal further revealed, “It’s a stick, which is attached to metal, so it required a lot of preparation. Aejaz bhai told me that if I didn’t actually hit Ranveer, the shot wouldn’t have the impact it should have. In the scene, it’s attached, and my intention was that this is the man I’ve been looking for for so long, and now I have it in my hands. Because of him, I lost my mentor. So I wanted to be as wild as possible.’
Aditya Uppal thanks Ranveer Singh
He thanked Ranveer for his guidance during the shoot: “Thanks to Ranveer Singh for helping me. He stopped me and guided me through the scene: where to hold, how to shave, how much pressure to apply. He told me that he works out in the gym for 15-20 minutes every day, specially prepared for this act. He knew I was going to hit him and he told me to go all out. We shot it around 3:30 in the morning.“
Aditya Uppal Sanjay Dutt the funeral
The actor spoke about shooting the funeral scene with Sanjay Dutt, and admitted that he had almost no idea what the plot was going to be about at the time. He explained that the directors described it as a very emotional beat, so he played it that way. However, when he later saw it on the big screen, he laughed alongside the theater crowd, much to his surprise. He shared, “It was my first day in Amritsar when I had to do Sanjay Dutt’s funeral scene, where I stood in front of his body to salute him. I had to wear a rose, and that was the first scene where I met the director, Aditya Dhar. I shot for Dhurandhar 2 first and didn’t know where the script was going. I shot the part when I had no reference to where I came from. So before doing the whole sequence, I was very nervous, and they told me that the scene was serious. And you see that goodbye, it comes to the ‘Tamma Tamma’ beat. I was very serious, I had tears in the scene, but in the theater I was laughing with everyone in the audience because I kept thinking that people were laughing. As an actor, my intention while performing that scene was completely different – that people would associate it with the feeling that I had lost my boss, because I had no context – but it was something completely different.”
Aditya Uppal reveals the secret of the script
Uppal also revealed that the film’s script was a closely guarded secret on the sets. He explained getting only the essentials for his episodes, with no information about what to do, the full plot, or the overall story.
