The talk about Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s next has taken a clearer shape. Operation Sindoor – After initial reports that India was preparing a film about its military response to the April 2025 attack in Pahalgam, it is now known that the project is based on Lt Gen KJS ‘Tiny’ Dhillon’s book, Operation Sindoor: The Untold Story of India’s Deep Strikes Inside Pakistan.
A story of scale, strategy and sacrifice
Positioning the film as timely and meaningful, Agnihotri says it is about going beyond the headlines and capturing the depth of the operation.“I have always believed in telling uncomfortable but necessary stories. My endeavor is to bring this story of courage, professionalism and strategic clarity to the audience in an authentic, edge-of-the-seat cinematic experience,” he told Hindustan Times.The film will chronicle the events of May 6-10, 2025, detailing how the operation unfolded.
A research-driven approach to storytelling
Backed by I Am Buddha Production and T-Series, directed by Bhushan Kumar, the project is being assembled as a heavy investigative narrative.As Agnihotri revealed, “We have conducted investigations in collaboration with various wings of the Armed Forces to understand not only what happened, but how and why it happened. What is emerging is much more complex and detailed than what is in the public domain.”

Echoing the sentiment, Bhushan Kumar has termed the film as a meaningful act rather than a mere cinematic revamp of the film.“Some stories are not chosen; they choose you. Operation Sindoor is one such story. When a nation experiences events of such magnitude, it is important to document them truthfully,” he said.Casting options and release dates have yet to be revealed at this stage, and officials expect to reveal more in the coming months.
Continuing the pattern of narratives inspired by real life
The film concluded his investigative trilogy after Agnihotri’s last work, The Bengal Files, Tashkent Files and Kashmir Files.With Operation Sindoor, the filmmaker seems to be returning to a familiar space, mixing real events with cinematic narrative in an attempt to spark a conversation about recent history.
