After following Moana on an epic animated adventure to find and restore Tefiti’s heart, it’s time to unite. Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson in the live-action adventure. A decade after the film won hearts, The Rock released a new trailer on Monday and extended a warm invitation to fans saying, “The ocean is calling. Join Moana, Maui, Heihei and Pua in an unforgettable adventure.”

About ‘Moana’
In “Moana,” Disney’s live-action remake of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated adventure, Moana, played by Catherine Laga’aia, answers the call of the ocean and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her Motunui island with the famous demigod Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson, on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people. While the teaser released last year kept many of the characters under wraps, this one gave fans their first look at Johnson as the demigod Maui, Pua the pig, and Heihei the chicken. Fans saw Sharkhead and Tefiti live as a raging volcano.
Fans React To ‘Moana’ Live Action Trailer
The live-action clip soon gave way to comparisons to the beloved animated film. Fans took to social media to share side-by-side screenshots of the two films. Many seemed critical of The Rock’s appearance as Maui. Some scathing tweets read: “Sorry, these Disney live-action remakes need to die. Absolutely disgraceful on every level.”Another said: “Rock’s new wig Moana trailer (crying emoji).”Moana’s pet pig and chicken managed to please fans with their detailed depiction. Meanwhile, Shark Head Maui as a hammerhead shark is very different from the animated version.
‘Moana’ cast and release date
Directed by Thomas Kail, the film will also star John Tui, Frankie Adams and Rena Owen. The film will also feature original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi and Mark Mancina, as well as an original score composed by Mancina. Audiences will be able to witness great cinematography, sound and songs only in theaters on July 10, 2026.
