With the Yogi Adityanath-led government rolling out one of the most ambitious incentive structures for athletes in the country, Uttar Pradesh has stepped up its efforts to emerge as a major sports hub. The focus of the state is clear – to encourage the youth to pursue sports as a serious career option rather than a mere recreational activity.At the heart of this push is a comprehensive cash prize scheme for medal winners in international and national competitions. The government has announced a total of Rs 6 crore for individual Olympic gold medalists of the state, Rs 4 crore for silver and Rs 2 crore for bronze. The winners of the team event are also generously rewarded, with Rs 3 crore for gold, Rs 2 crore for silver and Rs 1 crore for bronze.Big prizes are meant to inspire the next generation.The incentive structure extends beyond the Olympics to other major international events such as the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. In these competitions, the individual gold medal winners will be awarded Rs 3 crore while the silver and bronze medal winners will be awarded Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 75 lakh respectively.At the national level too, the state has ensured recognition of excellence. Individual gold medalists will get Rs 6 lakh, silver medalists Rs 4 lakh and bronze medalists Rs 2 lakh. Prizes for team events are Rs 2 lakh for gold, Rs 1 lakh for silver and Rs 50,000 for bronze.This systematic approach aims to build a strong pipeline of players from the grassroots to the elite level, ensuring that talent is identified and consistently rewarded.Job security and long-term support for athletesApart from financial incentives, the Uttar Pradesh government has also prioritized post-career security for athletes through jobs in various state departments. Since Yogi Adityanath took over, more than 500 athletes have been given government jobs, mostly in the police department. International medalists are often recruited as gazetted officers, underscoring the state’s commitment to recognizing sporting excellence.Prominent examples include Indian women’s cricketer Deepti Sharma, who was posted as a DSP in the UP Police after her stellar performance, and track star Parul Chaudhary, who is also serving in a similar role. This policy has provided both financial stability and social recognition to the players.Interestingly, the state’s support has extended beyond its own players. After the Tokyo Olympics, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra was honored by the UP government despite not being from the state, reflecting a broader commitment to celebrate sporting success.The state’s growing sports ecosystem will also be showcased during the upcoming Times of India Sports Awards to be held in Lucknow on March 21, 2026.
