The move is part of a larger plan to prepare the team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028. Although he will no longer lead the shortest format, Sterling will continue as the ODI captain and will be a key player in the T20 team.The recent tour of Ireland in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 did not go as hoped. The team finished fourth in their group, with only one win, a draw and two losses.
Sterling’s tournament was also cut short after suffering a knee injury during a match against the Australian national cricket team, limiting him to just two matches.After Sterling was sidelined, wicketkeeper-batsman Lorcan Tucker captained the side for the remainder of the matches. The experience highlighted the need to begin building a new leadership group for the future.

Although he is stepping down, Stirling has made it clear how important Ireland’s leadership is to him. “It has been a great honor to lead Ireland in this format and I am incredibly proud to have done so,” he said. “Captain your country is an honor that carries great responsibility, and I am very grateful for the trust and support I have received in this role,” he added.He thanked everyone around the team, saying, “I would like to thank my teammates, the coaching staff, and everyone involved with Cricket Ireland for their continued support, as well as the fans who have supported us so much.”Ireland will now look to appoint a new T20I captain soon as they begin preparations for the next World Cup cycle.
