For the filmmaker Vikram BhattThe arrival of ‘Haunted 3D: Echoes of the past’ in cinemas is much more than just another release. The horror film, which has just hit the theaters amid stiff competition, has managed to woo audiences and emerge as a surprise performer in its opening weekend. Behind this success, however, is a difficult journey full of financial setbacks, legal problems and personal difficulties.Reflecting on the film’s bumpy road to release, Bhatt shared an emotional note on social media, revealing the challenges that almost derailed the project.
Vikram Bhatt’s dream project, which faced initial setbacks
Sharing a picture with the caption ‘From hunted to haunted’, the filmmaker spoke optimistically about how the film started after the success of ‘1920: Horrors of the Heart’. “Two and a half years ago, Haunted: Echoes of the Past began as just another movie. It was born out of the success of ‘1920: Horrors of the Heart,’ and like all new movies, it was built on hope, excitement, and the belief that the road would be easier.“The optimism did not last long. According to Bhatt, funding issues surfaced just ten days into production, forcing the team to look for alternative ways to keep the project alive.“Ten days into shooting, the money ran out. Most films would die here. Not this one. We borrowed money for interest, negotiated with dealers and somehow kept the cameras rolling. Every day felt like a balancing act: keeping the film alive and keeping the wolves at the door.”
Vikram Bhatt to face one challenge after another
Even after overcoming the initial financial hurdles, the film’s journey was far from smooth. Bhatt revealed that production problems included complications in post-production and visual effects work. “Just when things seemed to stabilize, production challenges arrived. Then post-production challenges. Then VFX challenges. Every problem that could come up seemed determined to find its way to us.“As the team overcame these obstacles, an even bigger crisis emerged and brought the project to a complete standstill. In one of the more personal revelations in his memo, Bhatt spoke about being jailed alongside his wife on charges he continues to dispute. “And then life dealt its hardest blow. My wife and I were arrested for what I say were fakes. I spent 75 days in jail while Haunted was unfinished.”The filmmaker explained that while he was behind bars, the film remained incomplete and his financial liabilities continued to increase. At one point, he even suggested that the film should go ahead without him.“I made a phone call and suggested that the film be released without me. The answer that came back from Mr. Anand Pandit has stayed with me ever since. “No Vikram Bhatt, no movie released.” After returning to Mumbai, Bhatt found that his work on the project had stalled. Determined to finish what he started, he and his team put in grueling schedules to complete the film.“When I returned to Mumbai, I discovered that post-production had stalled. Along with people who refused to abandon the project, we worked eighteen- to twenty-hour days, doing whatever was necessary to finish the film.” Even then, the project’s problems were not over.
Legal obstacles before the release of the film “Haunted 3D: Echoes of the past”.
According to the filmmaker, a legal challenge surfaced as the film’s release date approached, casting doubt on whether it would ever make it to theaters.“When the destination was revealed, a legal dispute threatened to halt the film’s release. Two days before, no one knew if Haunted would make it to theaters.”He added that distributors and exhibitors were nervous, as years of effort seemed to be in jeopardy.“Then the film was cleared. Even then, due to the uncertainty surrounding the court’s order, the screening remained limited. The release went into theaters injured.”Despite the hurdles, Bhatt said the public’s response turned what seemed like a doomed release into a very gratifying experience. “By all normal criteria, he should have struggled. Instead, something extraordinary happened. The public arrived.” Summarizing his emotions, he wrote: “Finally, all I wanted was for the world to know about Haunted. And when it finally did, it was enough. That was all.“
