“When we were shooting that film, there was a lot of pressure. Studio, producers [thought] There should be s*x between Maximus and the female characters. I kept pushing back,” Crowe said during an appearance at the festival. His resistance to the proposed scene came from a deep understanding of his character’s journey and motivations.
Crowe explained that the ass*x scene in the film would ruin his character’s story arc and emotional trajectory. “This is the story of a man out to avenge the death of his wife and child,” the actor continued. “There can’t be a moment in that journey where he stops and has sex with someone. It doesn’t make sense because it ruins the journey.”Crowe said he “stuck to his guns,” and Scott eventually agreed with him on the creative direction. “Luckily, Ridley—even though he would have liked a sex scene between me and Connie Nielsen—agreed with me at the time that it was the emotional heart of the film,” he added.
