The rise of Bhagwan Dada after Albela

The Fall and Last Years of Bhagwan Dada

The Indian Express report also revisited a serious incident in 1942, when Bhagwan Dada injured Lalita Pawar in a scene. A slap damaged his left eye and caused facial paralysis. Pawar later said he was unemployed for two years. Bhagwan Dada later called the incident “unforgivable”.After Albela, Bhagwan Dada tried to continue his success with more films, including Jhamela, but his fortunes declined. Moneycontrol reported that he lost his wealth through failed films, bad habits and betrayals. He later admitted that drinking, gambling, bad company and neglecting his family had damaged his life.He also spoke openly about being unfaithful to his wife and said that “drink and women” were his weakness. Looking at his downfall, he said it was “God’s way of punishing him”. From a star with a bungalow, studio and imported cars, Bhagwan Dada had to sell his possessions and move to a small room in a chawl.In his later years, he accepted small papers to support his household. He said he was too proud to ask welfare groups for help, although eventually CINTAA and IMPAA sent him monthly aid. Dilip Kumar remained one of the few colleagues with whom he remained in touch.Bhagwan Dada died in 2002 after spending his last years far from his former wealth and fame. Her life was later revisited in the 2016 Marathi film Ekk Albela, but her legacy had already lived on through stars who carried the traces of her dance style into the last decades of Hindi cinema.
