New Delhi: Double Olympic medalist Manu Bhakar on Saturday paid an emotional tribute to her former coach Jaspal Rana, terming his death an “irreparable loss” and remembering the man she said she knew better than most.Bhakar shared a series of photos with the coach-turned-shooter decked out on X, along with a short but poignant message: “Irreparable loss.”Rana, one of India’s most successful shooters and an influential coach, died at the age of 49. He recently underwent a stent procedure in late May after experiencing chest pains and was admitted to hospital, where he died despite medical intervention.
Bhakkar remembers mentors and friends.
The 24-year-old, who made history at the Paris Olympics by winning two medals in the same edition of the Games after Independence, credited Rana with helping him rediscover confidence during one of the toughest phases of his career.“I still can’t believe it. It’s unbelievable news. I’m struggling to process it,” Bhaker told Olympics.com on Friday. “He was not only my coach, mentor or guide but also a friend who understood me better than most.”Their association, which witnessed both highs and lows, eventually turned into one of the most remarkable comeback stories in the Indian game. Bhakkar and Rana reunited before the Paris Olympics, and the partnership yielded historic results.
A partnership that enhanced Olympic glory
Bhakar recalled how Rana’s approach went beyond technical guidance and helped him navigate difficult moments.“There were times when he was strict, and there were times when he just listened,” she said. “He always wanted the best from me, even when I didn’t understand it at the time.Reflecting on their reunion, Bhakar said it felt like “coming home”.“He knew when I was confident, when I was nervous and when I needed support. He always found a way to bring out the best in me,” she said.Rana’s demise has left the Indian sporting community mourning the loss of one of its greatest marksmen and coaches, while Bhakar’s heartfelt tribute highlighted a deep bond both on and off the shooting range.
