The Tamil film industry is in shock after the death of the veteran director Bharathirajawho passed away on June 10, due to his poor health. Director Bharathiraja was referred to as the ‘Iyakkunar Imayam’ of the Tamil film industry. He directed more than 40 films and revolutionized the stories of rural subjects through cinema. Bharathiraja was also known for having a different style of filmmaking and discovering new talents.
Rajinikanth he says his last goodbye to his friend of 50 years
As tributes continue to pour in, superstar Rajinikanth visited Bharathiraja’s residence in Neelankarai, Chennai to pay his last respects. After speaking to the media, Rajinikanth became emotional recalling his long friendship with the director. “He was my friend for almost 50 years. Everyone knows about his talent and achievements. He introduced many actors, actresses and technicians to the film world and helped in the growth of Tamil cinema,” Rajinikanth was quoted as saying by Nakkheeran.

Bharathiraja’s honesty and courage were other things Rajinikanth remembered about the director. He spoke his mind, fearlessly, said Rajinikanth. “He was like a child at heart. Whatever he felt, he said directly. He criticized me too. ‘I like you as a person, but I don’t like your acting’. That was the kind of honesty he had. It was always a joy to be around him. People who speak so clearly are very rare,” recalled Rajinikanth. He added that this quality helped him maintain close ties with icons like Bharathiraja MGR, Karunanidhi and. Sivaji Ganesan.
Rajinikanth regrets missing a last meeting with Bharathiraja
The actor also shared a personal regret. He expressed his desire to meet Bharathiraja in his last days, but was told that the director’s health was improving and he could visit him later. “Unfortunately, I never got to see him for the last time. That is something I will always regret. His death was not sudden, but I wish I had known him before he left us. He will always remain in my memory, and his works will live forever in the hearts of the Tamil people,” said Rajinikanth. The bond between the two has been there since their first venture together, ’16 Vayathinile’, where Rajinikanth played his popular character Parattai in one of his earliest and most notable roles.
