New teaser of ‘Alpha’ starring Alia Bhatt Bobby Deol and Sharvari, has been making waves online since its release on Wednesday evening. The clip not only gives fans a first look at Alia’s character, but also sets the tone for the story that will unfold on the big screen next month.While the new clip has fired up fans, it has also sparked a wave of controversy online, with many viewers comparing the spy thriller to the box office hit “Dhurandhar”, which stars him. While “Alpha” marks Bhatt’s entry into the YRF Spy Universe, several social media users argued that its release after “Dhurandhar” has raised audience expectations for the genre, making it harder for spy films to generate the same level of excitement. “After Dhurandhar, these all feel like crap,” wrote one fan, while another shared screenshots comparing the visuals of the two films, featuring Ranveer and Alia in similar scenes – riding motorbikes through mountainous landscapes.
‘Alpha’ interview sparks criticism
A dialogue from the teaser seemed a lot backwards, and it was said that ‘Dhurandhar’ lacked the intensity and intrigue that had resonated with the audience. “Dhurandhar(1&2) has given the audience a taste of blood. After tasting that level of intensity, it’s hard to get excited about a trailer that looks like it was assembled from stale food. The wolf and the sheep part is hilarious!!” a user commented.Another fan contrasted the dialogues of the two films, writing: “Dialogues in Dhurandhar: If I have to spend my whole life chasing them, wearing the skin of those wolves, then so be it for me. Dialogues in Alpha: A wolf’s daughter is a wolf, sir.”
The ‘Dhurandhar’ effect
Several viewers also praised the filmmaker Aditya Dhar for revealing just enough to intrigue the film without giving too much away. Others, however, extended their criticism to the larger spy-action genre, questioning whether audiences are growing tired of spectacle-driven spy films.“Dhurandhar has set such high standards that everything else feels below average. The first look had only one dialogue, a full song and character introductions without revealing the plot. After watching the movie, people realized that most of these shots were from part 2. This is how teasers should be done,” read another post.“Even after watching Dhurandhar, they still didn’t realize that training and espionage is not done that way, and continued with the same nonsense they did in War, Tiger and Pathaan. The tattoo scene was so ridiculous that they literally felt like they were inviting the enemy, like ‘Aa bai, mujhe maar’,” commented an audience member.“After Dhurandhar, the action-oriented Spy Universe has become stale if it doesn’t have an engaging story and scale. YRF Spy Universe doesn’t even remotely have that. If they want to continue with this universe, they’ll have to make a silent spy movie that’s close to the Baby movies. This action thing won’t work.”
Fans defend ‘Alpha’
Not all reactions were completely dismissive, however. Some fans argued that comparisons between the two projects may be premature, given that they are different films with different creative goals. “Comparing Alpha and Dhurandhar is not very fair as they are completely different films. My point is not the comparison itself, but the lack of effort in the cinematography and overall presentation of the project. In fact, a large part of the audience already believes that Alpha will be the middle film. When it’s perception you’re dealing with, your teasers and trailers should work twice as hard to change the narrative. Even if the latest movie is average, the marketing should at least create excitement and make people curious,” commented a fan.Others remained open-minded saying, “#Dhurandhar has already set the bar high for any spy movie…gotta see how this one goes !!!”Another added, “Indian spy film coming after Dhurandhar has some tough action to follow. But this Alpha teaser doesn’t even try.” Viewers have made it clear that flashy VFX and action sets can’t make up for weak content. Yet here we are again.”Directed by Shiv Rawail, ‘Alpha’ is Alia’s first action film and one of the most awaited projects of YRF’s Spy Universe. The film has had several release date changes during production. Initially slated for a 2025 release, the film was later pushed to April, before Yash Raj Films announced July 10 as the release date. The makers have now brought forward the release by a week, ‘Alpha’ will hit the theaters worldwide on July 3rd.
