Rohini recalled being part of the team that traveled to England for the auditions. “But for Gandhi’s screen test, Smita was one of the contestants,” he explained, explaining how he, Naseeruddin Shah and Bhakti Barve traveled from India to take part in the selection process. “Yes, for Kasturba. When they met in England, I went from here. Me, Nasir and Bhakti Barve, the three of us went from here.”According to Rohini, Smita arrived from another international assignment and initially had no idea who was up for the role. “He didn’t know who they were all called,” when he finally discovered that Rohini was also being considered, his reaction left a lasting impression. “So when he came down and told them that Rohini has come too… great. Something like this happened,” instead of viewing the situation from a competitive perspective, Smita took the news with genuine warmth.The moment with Rohini over the years came after Smita’s interaction with Richard Attenborough. The veteran actor recalled how Smita honestly assessed the situation. “He said, Rohini. His mind was so clear,” Smita then shared a thought that surprised Rohini. “I’ve met Richard. But Rohini, it’s you.
