Aditya DharThe spy thriller “Dhurandhar” has garnered a lot of attention for its realistic depiction of the political and social world of India. The film is about an Indian spy working in Karachi and uses real names and references to real people in politics, government and terrorism. But viewers who watched the film closely noticed that an important storyline was left out. The story was linked to one of the most painful events in Indian history, the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Dhurandhar 2 uncut version: what the audience found
The uncut version of ‘Dhurandhar’ titled Raw and Undekha has given viewers on Netflix and JioHotstar a new reason to watch the film again. Many of them are doing just that, combing through scenes and spotting Easter eggs and subtle changes that weren’t seen in the original theatrical release. One of the most talked about discoveries is a key scene in between, where two childhood friends find themselves on the sides of a tense standoff. When Hamza aka Jaskirat (Ranveer Singh) shuns his old friend Pinda (Udaybir Sandhu) for his involvement in drug trafficking and smuggling to India, the exchange takes a poignant turn. As Jaskirat suggests that Pinda has betrayed his country, Pinda fires back with words that carry years of pain and hurt. “Keda desh, wo Desh jinne hume apna maneya hi nahi (The country that never accepted us as its own).”
The original 1984 dialogue of Dhurandhar 2 was dubbed
But the audience has now noticed something very important in that scene. The line spoken by Pinda in the film is not the original line, it is dubbed with another dialogue. Digging deeper, Reddit users discovered what the original line actually was. In Punjabi, Pinda’s original line: “Keda desh? Wo desh jinne chaurasi vich apne bhaiyo nu mareya tha.” It translates to: the same country that killed our brothers in 84. This line is a direct reference to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which killed thousands and is seen as one of the darkest moments in Indian history. It is also considered the period when the Khalistani insurgency in Punjab was at its peak.
Dhurandhar 2 also changed his real life name Militant Khalistani the character of
The dialogue wasn’t the only thing that changed in the film. “Dhurandhar” also quietly changed one of its characters between the two parts. In the first ‘Dhurandhar’, a character appeared in the credits named Happy PhD. In Part 2, the same character was renamed Sunny DVD. The reason behind this change becomes clear when you see who Happy PhD really was. Harmeet Singh, popularly known as Happy PhD, was a true Khalistani militant and leader of the Khalistan Liberation Force. India declared him a terrorist and he was killed in 2020 under circumstances that are still mysterious and unsolved.
Dhurandhar 2 Changes: What Reddit Viewers Are Saying
When screenshots and details of these changes started making the rounds on Reddit on Tuesday, it didn’t take long for viewers to share their reactions. Some were curious to know what the original version of the movie looked like. “I really want to know what the original movie looked like without any scenes being cut, removed or changed,” wrote one. Others believed the changes were a deliberate creative and safety decision. “Aditya Dhar played it safe, focusing on Pakistan’s terror angle,” argued another. However, not everyone agreed that the changes were necessary or effective. “But did these changes really help. The Sunny DVD part wasn’t the main thing in that chapter anyway. As for Pinda, it was obvious that he’s Khalistani. So I don’t think dubbing those conversations helped anything. The Khalistani angle was pretty obvious. Someone in Canada shrunk the screen on day 1, so you can imagine that the message was relayed to another user.”
