Bharathiraja’s breakthrough came in 1977 with ’16 Vayathinile’. The film appeared Kamal HaasanSridevi and Rajinikanth in pivotal roles and was a resounding success. The film is still one of Tamil cinema’s finest achievements.Over the years, he directed several acclaimed films including ‘Kizhakke Pogum Rail’, ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’, ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’, ‘Vedham Pudhithu’, ‘Kizhakku Cheemayile’, ‘Karuthamma’ and ‘Anthimanthaarai’.

Manoj followed his father’s footsteps and made his career as an actor and filmmaker.Despite personal setbacks, Bharathiraja’s contribution to cinema was unparalleled. More importantly, he changed the grammar of Tamil cinema by proving that realistic stories could achieve critical and commercial success.Meanwhile, ‘Thudarum’ starrer Mohanlal marked one of his last acts. He played the role of stunt master Palani Swamy in the Mohanlal starrer.
