The renowned director reportedly breathed his last at his Chennai residence in the wee hours of Wednesday due to age-related health complications.The Indian Express report suggests that his health had declined in recent months, especially after the sudden death of his son Manoj in 2025.

Bharathiraja is credited with bringing realism and rural life to mainstream Tamil cinema. At a time when studio-based productions dominated the industry, he chose to tell stories rooted in towns and everyday life.His breakthrough came with the 1977 classic ’16 Vayathinile’. The film is considered a landmark in Tamil cinema and paved the way for a new style of storytelling.His filmography includes memorable works such as Muthal Mariyathai and several other critically acclaimed productions. During his career, he received numerous awards, including six National Film Awards and Padma Shri.
Khushbu Sundar makes a moving tribute
Among the many celebrities who mourned his death was actress and politician Khushbu Sundar.
