Shreyas The Mumbai batsman, appointed T20 captain in place of Surya Kumar, lost his place in the squad despite leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title earlier this year.Speaking during the toss in the Mumbai T20 League, Surya Kumar chose to focus on celebrating his long-time partner’s success.“So happy for Shreyas Iyer. We played a lot of cricket together for Mumbai and India. Most importantly, there are now 3 back-to-back T20 captains for India from Mumbai and this is a very proud moment for all of us in Mumbai cricket and we all need to celebrate it.Suryakumar’s reaction comes soon after the Chief Selector. Ajit Agarkar Explained the reasoning behind the decision to move in a new direction.“Regarding Suriya, obviously it’s tough to win the (T20) World Cup right now. But like most World Cups, we try to figure out what’s the best way for you to move forward,” Agarkar said.“(It was) partly because of his own form but looking at the next two-year cycle, or a little over two years until the next World Cup, we thought it was the best way to go and, as I said, Shreyas is a very worthy captain.“We gave it a lot of thought, especially when someone has driven you to win the World Cup. It’s not the easiest discussion, but I don’t necessarily think that… at some stage, we were going to see it. Now, did the IPL form dictate it; I’m not so sure that’s the case. There was always talk around it.”The decision comes after a difficult period for Surya Kumar. Since becoming India’s full-time T20 captain in July 2024, his batting numbers have dropped considerably. His average has dropped from 43.60 to 25.88, while his strike rate has dropped from 168.75 to 152.03.Despite the disappointment of losing both the captaincy and his place in the team, Suriyakumar’s public response reflected support for his Mumbai teammate, who now embarks on a new chapter as India’s T20I captain.
