The filmmaker said Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma Starrer had a strong idea at the center, but felt that the final film did not utilize that potential well. The romantic comedy-drama marked his first collaboration with the two actors. It received a lot of pre-release buzz, but received a negative response after its release and failed to live up to expectations at the box office.

Indian Express reported that Imtiaz spoke about ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ on ‘Unfiltered by Samdish’. When asked to rate the film out of 10, he gave it a “3”.Explaining the answer, Imtiaz said: “I think it was a missed opportunity because of the potential of the story. I should work in a different way.’ He added, “I liked the potential of the story more than the story and definitely more than the movie.”The filmmaker then explained the idea behind Harry’s character. He said he thought of a man from a village in Punjab, who goes abroad with innocence and tenderness, but is slowly hardened by life.Imtiaz said the man’s emotional response to intimacy shaped the character. According to him, Harry was in deep pain and had trained himself to walk away after intimate moments so he wouldn’t have to deal with tenderness again.

This is not the first time that Imtiaz has spoken about the failure of the film. Earlier in an interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, he said that someone told him, “So if it didn’t go well, it’s still your film.”He said that the notice affected him a lot. “Toh mujhe bohot dard hua (It hurt me a lot),” he recalled. Imtiaz also called the film an “unfortunate child” and said he felt “a strange melancholy” looking back.He said that at that time he felt despondent about the film and was also bedridden with dengue for a month. Imtiaz is now gearing up for the release of ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’, which will hit the theaters on June 12.
