Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor’s ‘Peddi’ hit the theaters on June 4 and the sports drama created a lot of attention before its release. Ahead of the film’s arrival, filmmaker Buchi Babu Sana and music composer AR Rahman sat down for a promotional interview.During the interaction, Rahman openly spoke about his initial reaction to Ram Charan’s role in the film. The composer revealed that he had questions about how certain scenes would be handled. However, his opinion changed after watching the performance unfold on screen.According to Rahman, Ram Charan managed to bring a fictional character to life in a believable way.” The way Ram Charan completely transformed into the character was remarkable. For a fictional role to feel so real in emotion and essence was truly impressive to me.”
The kiss scene also left Rahman in awe
Rahman explained that some scenes piqued his curiosity. He wondered if the emotions and intensity would come across naturally on screen. However, the actress finally surprised with her execution.The composer particularly highlighted the moments when Ram Charan had to show emotional depth. He also mentioned that a romantic sequence also stood out to him.“While watching certain scenes, I wondered how she would pull them off and connect with those emotions. But she handled everything very naturally. Even the kiss sequence felt effortless. She seemed to really inhabit the character, and her hard work was visible in every frame,” said Rahman.
Rahman talks about ‘Peddi’s main theme
Apart from the performance, Rahman also discussed the basic idea of the film. He described ‘Peddi’ as a story that focuses on human strength and mental belief.The film follows a character who plays various sports. Ram Charan’s role includes cricket, wrestling and sprinting. Rahman said the film explores how people often put restrictions on themselves.“It reflects the strength of the human spirit. Our mind often decides our limits. If you think you can only lift 10 kg, that becomes your limit. But if you think you can lift 100 kg, your possibilities expand.”He also added: “In sports and music, people often decide their own limits. When limits are created in the mind, they shape what can be achieved. A character like Peddi breaks those barriers. He excels in cricket, kushti and other sports, showing how much a person can achieve when there is no head wall.”
Buchi Babu compared to Sana Shankar
During the discussion, Rahman also drew similarities between Buchi Babu Sana’s filmmaking style and director Shankar’s work in the 1990s. Both creators balanced meaningful ideas with commercial narratives.“I actually saw parallels between (you and) Shankar garu. For Shankar garu, Gentleman, there is a theme and an ambition for the hero, but the film is also commercial. This is different because it is about sports,” he said.He then continued with another comparison: “In the 1990s, Shankar created films like Indian with Gentleman. While watching this, I felt a similar connection. This film explores sports, it also has a meaningful purpose. It shows a character who strives for something greater, even if it is for a small cause related to humanity or his people. That feeling reminded me of what I experienced when I was watching Gentleman and Mudhalva in India.“
Only ‘Peddi’ ‘Game Changer’ is on pre-sale
“Peddi” managed to record strong pre-release business across India. Trade reports suggested that the film earned around 20.1 crores through advance bookings. Almost 7.9 lakh tickets were sold before release.Despite the encouraging response, the film could not beat Ram Charan’s ‘Game Changer’ in pre-release sales. The former film collected Rs 26.8 crore before its release and sold around 9.3 lakh tickets.
