How Subhash Ghai bet Jackie Shroff on ‘Khal Nayak’ (1993)
Reflecting on the original film, Shroff was candid about how much risk Ghai took to cast him, a raw model of a chawl in such a high-stakes role.Shroff exclaimed, “Baap re! Kya tension liya. Panga liya na?” (Oh my god! He took so much strain. He really stepped up to the challenge, didn’t he?) said Shroff, acknowledging Ghai’s legendary care for his actors. “Boss hain toh sambhala unhone. Naap tol ke bachcho ki tarah sambhala. He says his actors are like his children. He treats them like his children.” (As the head, he managed everything. He protected and measured everything as we were his children.)The connection goes back even further when Ghai gave Shroff his Bollywood breakthrough in the 1983 action romance ‘Hero’, making their creative relationship one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring.
