Nick Jonas reveals the surprising difference between preparing for concerts and filming scenes with Paul Rudd

Nick Jonas, equally comfortable on a concert stage and on a film set, revealed that the preparation for each is quite different. The 33-year-old musician and actress opened up about her pre-performance rituals with her ‘Power Ballad’ co-star Paul Rudd, sharing a key distinction between preparing for a show and filming a scene. In a recent interview, when Jonas spoke with PEOPLE, he said: “I mean, at the end of the day, it’s the same thing. You’re doing a show, you’re opening the walls of your personal life and experience to participate with everyone else. The only difference is, and this is not as interesting, but the only difference is I’ll have a show before it’s quiet. For one scene, I don’t do that.”Rudd, 57, quickly added his own punchline. “We’ve never done that before. But that’s only because it’s so hard to find alcohol in Ireland.”

What was ‘Power Ballad’ about?

In ‘Power Ballad’, Rudd played Rick, a former wedding singer who performed at a wedding attended by Jonas’ pop star Danny. The two bonded over music at a late-night jam session, and when Danny turned one of Rick’s songs into the hit that launched his career, Rick set out to regain the recognition he believed he deserved. The film was shot in Ireland with Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, Jack Reynor and Peter McDonald, who also wrote the screenplay.

What Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd learned together on set

Despite coming from very different corners of the entertainment world, Jonas and Rudd said they took something of great value from working together. Rudd, a comedy veteran known for his roles in the ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Avengers’ franchises, had warm words for his co-star. “I learned that you could be an incredibly talented musician and still be the nicest, nicest guy. Nick, that’s you,” she said. “And you have a real way of conveying emotion and showing exactly what your character is thinking without saying anything, which is the best thing you can do when you’re acting.Jonas, a former child star best known for his work with the Jonas Brothers’ brothers Joe and Kevin, was no exception. “One of the most exciting parts of being on this film with you, but an acting project that I’ve been particularly lucky to do, is that you learn something from everyone,” he said. “And Rudd mentioned some stories about being on set with Jack Nicholson, other people you’ve worked with. It’s great to see that even at your level and your experience, that ability to be a sponge is still there, and I tried to do that with you.”‘Power Ballad’ is currently in theaters.
