Almost four decades after Veerana became one of Bollywood’s most unforgettable cult figures, actress Jasmine Dhunna remains one of the biggest mysteries in the industry. Now, the filmmaker Deepak Ramsay has spoken about the sudden disappearance of the actor, that even the Ramsay family does not know where he is.Jasmine became an overnight sensation after starring in the 1988 horror classic Veerana, where her portrayal of a beautiful yet terrifying spirit enthralled audiences. Although the film was a huge success, he never appeared in another film and disappeared from public life, sparking decades of speculation about his whereabouts.
“People were crazy about him”
Speaking to Hindi Rush, Deepak Ramsay recalled the Jasmine frenzy created after the release of Veerana.“Jasmine was very young. In fact, before Veerana, she did one or two films, including one with Vinod Khan, but she didn’t make a mark in those projects,” he said.According to Ramsay, everything changed after Veerana.“When Veerana was released, it created havoc. People were crazy about her. She was stunningly beautiful and the character itself became iconic. Every night she came out looking for a new victim, and the audience was mesmerized.”He described Jasmine as a “deadly combination of innocence and beauty”, adding that her transformation from a stunning woman to a terrifying witch became one of the film’s biggest talking points.
The producers kept asking for her number
Ramsay revealed that Jasmine’s popularity exploded so quickly that filmmakers constantly approached Ramsay about casting her.“It created an enigma. People kept asking, ‘Who is this actor?’ Many producers called us and asked us for his contact details, because they wanted to sign him for films”.However, despite becoming one of the most talked about faces of the late 1980s, Jasmine decided not to continue in the industry.“Suddenly, knowingly or unknowingly, he decided he didn’t want to work anymore. He stopped taking calls and never did another film after that.”
“Even today, we don’t know where he is”
Over the years, various theories have emerged about Jasmine’s disappearance, from claims that she went abroad to rumors linking her departure to an alleged underground care. None of these claims have ever been officially verified.When asked if he knows where Jasmine is today, Ramsay admits he has no idea.“That’s a very good question. I honestly don’t know.”He explained that Jasmine had been in touch with the Ramsay family for a while after Veerana, but eventually all communication stopped.“Initially, she told Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay that she was not interested in doing more films and asked them not to share her number with the producers. We respected her wishes and never gave out her contact details.”“But slowly and steadily, it disappeared,” he added.
Rumors of underground care
Ramsay also addressed long-standing rumors that some underworld characters were trying to court Jasmine because of her beauty.“I heard those rumors too. Whether they were true or not, I can’t say. But there were stories that some people connected to the underworld were trying to contact him.”He added that if such events had happened, they would have contributed to the decision to stay away from the public eye.“Maybe that’s why he wanted to cut himself off and retreat into his shell.”Earlier reports and industry speculation have repeatedly linked Jasmine’s disappearance to alleged underground care, although no concrete evidence has emerged to confirm these claims.
