Boney Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, Khushi Kapoor move to Madras HC over Sridevi's Chennai property: Report

A property owned by the late actress Sridevi on East Coast Road (ECR) in Chennai has been at the center of a legal battle for almost a year. Recent reports say her husband Boney Kapoortogether with her daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, have come close Madras High Court After an additional district court in Chengalpattu refused to dismiss a civil suit regarding a 4.7-acre plot purchased by the actor. The dispute dates back to 2025, when Boney Kapoor first moved the court alleging that three people claimed the property. Since then, the case has been under trial.According to The Hindu , on Monday, March 16, Justice TV Thamilselvi agreed to hear the Kapoor family’s petition on March 26 and extended an interim order staying the trial in the case. The report says that three people, MC Sivakami, her sister MC Natarajan and their mother Chandrabhanu have claimed rights over a portion of Sridevi’s land. Also, the actor and his sister have sought to cancel the four sale deeds under which they acquired the 4.7 hectare property.Responding to the claims, Boney Kapoor told the court that Sridevi had bought the land in 2025 in 1988. He further explained that the property originally belonged to MC Sambanda Mudaliar, who had three sons and two daughters, and that the land was divided among the family members in 1960.In their petition, the Kapoor family said that Chandrabanu’s marriage to MC Chandrasekaran, who claimed to be the original owner of the property, took place while his first marriage was still valid, voiding the second union under laws prohibiting bigamy. Furthermore, they have alleged that the plaintiffs have not disclosed this crucial detail. According to the release, the Kapoor family stated, “The omission of a humanly relevant and legally relevant fact is a deliberate attempt to mislead this court and is fraudulent, undermining the basis of their claim. The third respondent (Mrs. Chandrabanu) was fully aware that her marriage to MC Banumathi (of Chandrasekaran) was contracted on 5th February, 1975 when she was subsisting of a prior and valid marriage.”Furthermore, the family stated that they have owned the property for almost 38 years and questioned how the lawsuit to annul the sales deeds executed in 1988 could only be filed in 2025. They further argued that no objection was raised during the MC. Chandrasekaran was alive; He passed away in 1995. They also stated that MC Sivakami and MC Natarajan came of age in 1995 and 1999 respectively.On the other hand, the plaintiffs have said that the Kapoor family has neither legal nor moral standing to declare it illegitimate or question the relationship between the parents. They claim that the sale deeds of 1988 themselves were invalid and the family has been accused of fraudulently obtaining a revenue registration ‘patta’ that stipulates ownership of the land for ownership of the property in 2023.The complainants stated that they only discovered the property and alleged “illegal transactions” in connection with it in 2023, after which the case was dismissed in 2025. After hearing both sides, the additional district court on December 1, 2025 refused to dismiss the plea filed by Boney Kapoor and his family, stating that a full trial was required. This decision prompted the Kapoor family to approach the Madras High Court through the present civil revision petition.
