After two months, 72 matches and countless twists and turns, IPL 2026 has come to the end of business. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already qualified for the final and now await the winner of Friday’s blockbuster Qualifier 2 between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals. On paper, this is a contest between two very balanced sides full of batting firepower and wicket-taking quick attacks. But heading into the knockout clash, one name has completely hijacked the conversation – Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener has transformed from a youngster to the defining story of IPL 2026. A 29-ball 97 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator has left opponents scrambling for answers and fans wondering if anyone can stop him ahead of Sunday’s final. That innings may have fallen three runs short of a hundred, but it reinforced a terrifying reality for bowlers — Suryavanshi can decide a T20 game almost entirely within the powerplay. And that’s why Friday’s Qualifier 2 could boil down to a tactical question: Can Gujarat Titans get Suryavanshi out early, or will RR’s fearless batting once again overwhelm an elite bowling attack?Suryavanshi: The biggest variable in the competitionSuryavanshi’s numbers this season are ridiculous even by modern T20 standards. He leads the race for the Orange Cap with 680 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 242.85. He has hit one hundred, four fifties and an astonishing 65 sixes – the most ever in a single IPL season. What makes it even more dangerous is where those runs come from. An astonishing 490 of his 680 runs have come within the powerplay. This means that almost 72% of his season total has come in the first six overs.Simply put, if the opposition bowlers fail to remove him early, RR are usually out of the contest before the middle overs begin.Interestingly, Gujarat Titans have had a partial win against them earlier this season. In the two league stage meetings, Suryavanshi got off to explosive starts but failed to convert them into match-winning knocks – 31 off 18 balls in Ahmedabad and 36 off 16 in Jaipur. But even these short innings exposed the challenge facing GT. A batsman scoring at a strike rate of around 200 through three overs can completely change the momentum of a knockout match.Milanpur, where RR have won all four of their matches, including two this season, has also become a particularly happy hunting ground for the Royals’ top order.Powerplay by Vaibhu Suryavanshi

Rabad and Siraj grab the keyIf GT is to stop Suryavanshi, the onus will largely fall on Kagiso Rabada. Muhammad Siraj. Both fast bowlers have been among the most effective new-ball operators this season. Rabada, who is currently the joint leader in the race for the Purple Cap with 26 wickets, took 18 wickets inside the powerplay. Siraj took 13 of his 17 wickets in the first six overs.Together they form the most dangerous new ball duo in the competition. Yet there is a concern for GT — Suryavanshi has already shown that he is not afraid of either of them. The RR opener has scored 25 off 14 balls against Rabada and 38 off 20 balls against Siraj this season. Regardless of the bowler or the situation, the aggressive intent remains. However, GT has identified a potential weakness. In the previous meeting, Siraj dismissed Suryavanshi with a sharp short ball. The youngster has looked vulnerable at times against well-paced pace aimed at the body, especially early in the innings. GT’s fast bowlers are expected to attack the zone aggressively on Friday. But the risk associated with this tactic is huge. At a good batting surface, an incorrect bouncer plan can repeatedly disappear into the stands. And Suryavanshi has shown throughout the season that fame means nothing when he starts swinging freely.Powerplay by Rabada and Siraj

Grand strategy battle: top orders against new ball attacksApart from the Suryavanshi hype, Qualifier 2 also offers an interesting tactical battle between two top batting sides and two quality pace attacks.RR’s batting prowess does not end with the youngster. Yeshsavi Jaiswal Suriya may have been overshadowed by Vinshi’s heroics, but he still has 426 runs at a strike rate of 153-plus. Dhruv Jural has quietly emerged as one of RR’s most reliable middle-order partners with over 500 runs this season. The challenge for the RR is whether it can keep the top-order GT’s relentless pace battery alive.Top RR Batsmen in IPL 2026

Apart from Rabada and Siraj, GT has Prasad Krishna and Jason Holder As for the wicket-taking options, Rashid Khan leads the spin attack with 19 wickets – the most by a spinner in this fast season.GT also has favorable matchups. Rabada dismissed Jaiswal three times while conceding just 27 runs in 27 balls. Rashid also managed to keep RR’s middle order stroke makers relatively quiet through the middle overs. That bowling depth gives GT a slight edge structurally. Unlike many other teams this season, they can continue to attack for wickets even after the power play.RR, meanwhile, may require additional support from Ryan Prague And Donovan Ferreira, especially if the top order fails to dominate early on.Top GT Bowlers in IPL 2026

GTK’s top three are just as dangerous. While RR relies heavily on Suryavanshi, Gujarat Titans likewise rely on their top three – Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler.Gill and Sudharsan have been among the most consistent batsmen this season, scoring 618 and 652 runs respectively. Buttler has scored almost 500 runs and is one of the most dangerous white ball players in the world.Unlike the RR’s explosive style, the GT’s top order is built around sustainable accumulation combined with calculated aggression. GT’s top order rarely collapses, but if those three fail, they lack lower-order firepower. This lack of lower-order firepower is GT’s biggest weakness heading into Qualifier 2.Washington Sundar, with 311 runs, is their next highest scorer after the top order. Rahul Tiyotia has made cameos, but GT clearly does not possess the same batting depth as RR.Top GT Batsmen in IPL 2026

This is the place. Jofra Archer becomes critical. The RR pacer has enjoyed a brilliant season with 24 wickets in 15 games and seems to be peaking at the ideal moment. He has taken nine wickets in his last four matches, including two wickets each in knockout-style games against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad.Archer also has an impressive record against Gayle, dismissing him three times in 30 balls. But the problem with RR is support from the other end. Nandre Burger and Brijesh Sharma have been inconsistent despite picking up wickets at intervals. RR also need Ravi Bishnoi and Ravindra Jadeja to contribute more in the middle overs if they are to comprise GT’s disciplined batting unit.Interestingly, Sai Sudharsan handled Archer with relative ease, scoring an unbeaten 44 off 33 balls. Buttler, meanwhile, has historically dominated Archer in T20 cricket, scoring at a strike rate of around 195 against him.Top RR Bowlers in IPL 2026

Suryavanshi remains the X factor.Take away the story of Vaibhav Suryavanshi and it looks like an unusual contest. There are high orders of aristocracy on both sides. Both have high quality attacks.RR probably has a slight edge in batting depth through Parag and Ferreira. GT has an overall more balanced bowling attack. But knockout games are often decided by one uncontrollable variable – and this season that variable has been solar. If GT removes it early, the contest immediately becomes balanced and strategic. If they fail, Qualifier 2 could quickly turn out to be another display of fearless hitting from the youngster who has already redefined what is possible in the IPL season.
