The Madras High Court dismissed a public interest litigation seeking a ban on Suriya and RJ Balaji’s film ‘Karuppu’. The film, which was released on May 14, has received a great response from the audience and is doing well in theaters. Lawyer Tamilvendhan filed the petition saying that the movie portrayed the judiciary disrespectfully. The matter was heard in the Madras High Court before a bench comprising Justices GR Swaminathan and V. Lakshminarayanan.
Court rejects plea to ban ‘Karuppu’
According to Bar And Bench, the judges rejected the petition and made several important observations during the hearing. The jury stated that corruption within the judiciary cannot be completely denied and said that corrupt judges have existed and do exist. Judges have also seen that the courts themselves take measures against these “black sheep” within the system. Justice GR Swaminathan is said to have watched ‘Karuppu’ and stated that the film was nothing more than a fictional story involving a corrupt judge and an unethical lawyer. The court said the film should be seen as a work of cinematic creativity rather than a direct attack on justice.

During the hearing, the judges pointed out that Tamil cinema often uses exaggerated narratives and emotional scenes. They explained that ‘Karuppu’ also follows the same style and should not be considered as a factual representation of the entire judicial system. The panel further noted that the portrayal of corruption in a fictitious courtroom does not automatically constitute contempt under the Contempt of Courts Act of 1971. According to the judge, the film only criticizes some fictional characters and not the judiciary as a whole.
