New Delhi: For almost half of IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad looked far from a championship contender. They won just one of their first four league matches and looked set for another inconsistent campaign.But what happened next was one of the most remarkable changes of the season.SRH turned into the most feared batting side in the competition, winning eight of their last 10 league matches, including a dominant five-match winning streak, to finish level on points with top two sides Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans. Only an inferior net run rate denied them a place in Qualifier 1 and, with it, a second chance to reach the final.By the time the playoffs came around, SRH looked like no one wanted to face this team. Then came 15-year-old batting sensation Vibhu Suryavanshi.He scored 97 runs off just 29 balls Rajasthan Royals Completely dashed SRH’s title hopes in the eliminator at Milanpur. RR piled up 243/8 before bowling out Hyderabad for 196, ending an otherwise brilliant comeback season.

IPL 2026 will be remembered as the most batting dominated season in the history of the tournament. The average first innings score during the league phase reached a staggering 192.04, while the overall winning average exceeded 217.Even a total above 200 often proves unsafe. Teams scoring over 200 managed just a 19-16 win-loss record, while 220-plus scores were chased nine times this season — compared to just five successful 220-plus chases in the previous 18 editions.The main reason behind this batting explosion was SRH.They totaled nine scores of 200 or more during the season and built their campaign around relentless aggression at the top of the order. Their batting unit overwhelmed the opposition time and again, turning even dreaded run chases into manageable targets.Yet in the most important match of the season, their own bowling attack was helpless against Suryavanshi’s once-in-a-generation knock.

Lack of powerplay wickets hurt SRH badly
Despite having one of the fastest attacks on paper, SRH struggled to attack consistently with the new ball.Sri Lankan fast bowler Ishan Malinga topped his bowling charts with 20 wickets in 15 matches and was among the season’s highest wicket takers. However, only five of those wickets came in the power play. This statistic sums up one of SRH’s biggest problems.They were rarely able to finish the opposition early, allowing rival batting line-ups to quickly settle into batting-friendly levels. Young bowlers Saqib Hussain and Praful Hinge provided good support with 15 and 14 wickets respectively, but match-winning bursts came infrequently.The mid-season return of captain Pat Cummins coincided with SRH’s revival, but his personal numbers remained modest. Cummins took just eight wickets in eight games, including a disappointing wicketless spell in the eliminator.SRH’s spin department also failed to dominate. Shivang Kumar’s nine wickets made him their most successful spinner, highlighting his lack of wicket-taking impact in the middle overs.

Top-heavy batting lineup exposed in knockout clashSRH’s batting success was built almost entirely around their explosive top four.Henrik Klaasen scored 624 runs Ishan Kishan 602 and Abhishek Sharma scored 563 runs. Travis Head scored 410 despite struggling for consistency compared to the other three.The quartet carried SRH throughout the league stage, but their dominance also created another problem – the middle and lower order remained largely untested.When the pressure of the playoffs came, that weakness was brutally exposed.Chasing 244 against Rajasthan Royals, SRH lost their top-order stars in the first seven overs. Suddenly, a middle order that had barely faced pressure all season was asked to produce a miracle. It never came.Nitish Kumar Reddy scored 302 runs during the campaign, but apart from him there were no meaningful contributions from the rest of the batting unit. Salil Arora could only score 156 runs in 11 innings, while no other batsman could cross the 100-run mark.SRH’s batting firepower masked those concerns during the league stage, but knockout cricket exposed a lack of depth and experience outside the top order.

What next for SRH?
Despite the heartbreaking exit, SRH is one of the strongest teams heading into the future.Their explosive batting core is already among the best in the league, while young bowlers like Malinga, Hussain and Henge have shown plenty of promise to be long-term assets.But the franchise also has several areas to address.SRH need more wickets in the powerplay, more consistency from Cummins as the pace spearhead and most importantly, genuine wicket-taking spinners who can control matches in the middle overs.They also need a more battle-ready middle order that can handle the pressure when the top order collapses.IPL 2026 showed that SRH can dominate teams when conditions suit their aggressive batting style. But it also showed that title-winning teams need balance beyond just explosive top-order batting.For most of the season, SRH looked unstoppable. Then an unforgettable innings from a teenager shattered their title dreams.
