In a major change in its examination process, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the Civil Services Examination (CSE) Preliminary 2026 provisional answer key before the completion of the final result process for the first time.Candidates who appeared for the UPSC CSE Prelims 2026 exam can now check the answer key through the official website upsc.gov.in. The Commission has also opened a dedicated question paper representation portal for candidates who wish to raise objections against any answer.The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam 2026 for recruitment to services including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS) was conducted on May 24 in two shifts across the country.This year more than 8 lakh candidates appeared for the exam.

Candidates can follow these steps to download the provisional answer key once it is released:

  • A new page will open on the screen.
  • Click on “Answer Key PDF” link.
  • Download Provisional Answer Key PDF.
  • Match your answers with the official answers to estimate your score.

UPSC CSE Preliminary 2026 Answer Key: object action

Candidates who are not satisfied with any of the answers mentioned in the provisional key can submit objections through the online representation portal.While submitting challenges, candidates must also upload supporting documents and explanations for their claims. Subject experts appointed by UPSC will review all the objections before preparing the final answer key.The commission has clarified that the final answer key will be released after the completion of the entire examination period.

UPSC CSE Prelims 2026: Major Procedural Reforms

The early release of Provisional Answer Key is being seen as one of the biggest procedural reforms introduced by UPSC in recent years.Earlier, candidates mostly relied on the unofficial answer keys released by the coaching institutes to estimate their scores after the exam.With the release of the official provisional answer key, candidates will now be able to check their performance more accurately and start preparing for the mains exam without waiting for the unofficial solution.

UPSC CSE Prelims 2026: Exam Statistics

According to UPSC, the exam was conducted at 2,072 centers across 83 cities in India.About 67% of the 8.19 lakh registered candidates appeared for the exam. The number of registrations and attendances was lower than last year, when around 9.5 lakh candidates registered and around 5.8 lakh appeared for the examination.Delhi recorded the highest number of candidates with 70,885 appearing at 144 centres. Hyderabad followed with 44,209 candidates at 100 centres, while 39,147 candidates participated at 79 centers in Patna.Kargil in Ladakh had the lowest number of candidates, with 98 candidates at one centre.Candidates can visit the official UPSC website for Provisional Answer Key, Objection Process, and more updates regarding Civil Services Exam 2026.
