New Delhi: The stage is set for the biggest clash of the Indian Premier League 2026 playoffs as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Tuesday. The winner will seal a direct berth in the finals, while the losing team will get another chance through Qualifier 2.Ahead of the high-stakes clash, GT assistant coach Vijay Dahiya described the encounter as a true battle between two quality teams.“The moment you say battle, yes, it’s going to be a battle, it’s between two teams that we’ve met twice in this edition and it’s 1-1, both are really good sides. Yes, you can say that and equally matches, some big players on both sides and both teams play as a unit, I think the assistant of both teams said,” before the clash.RCB and GT finished first and second on the points table with 18 points respectively, separated only by net run rate. The two teams have also shared honors 1-1 this season, while their overall records are tied at 4-4.While RCB are eyeing back-to-back IPL titles after ending their long-awaited trophy last season, GT will be hoping to recreate the magic of their dream debut campaign in 2022 when they clinched the title in their first season.Bowling units can decide Qualifier 1.Both teams boast of explosive batting line-ups, but Dahia believes the bowling could play a decisive role in the knockout contest. The top two spots in the list of leading wicket takers are occupied by RCB and GT bowlers.RCB pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and GT speedster Kagiso Rabada have each taken 24 wickets this season and will be responsible for leading their respective bowling attacks in the big game.“I think at the end of the day, you see teams putting runs on the board, but at the end you have to have a strong bowling unit and that’s what it’s all about. But the other thing that is very important if you look at the consistency in both the sides as far as the bowling unit is concerned, it is very high.“And the self-belief in the bowlers and the belief of the captain or the management in those bowlers or the bowling unit, you hardly see any change on either side and I think that pays off.”Kohli, Gill and Sai Sudharsan are in focus.Dahiya also highlighted the importance of Virat Kohli, Shibman Gill and Sai Sudharsan ahead of the blockbuster clash.Kohli has been in superb touch this season, scoring 557 runs in 14 matches at an average of 50.63 and a strike rate of 163.82. He also has one century and four half-centuries to his name.On the other hand, Gayle and Sudharsan are the two highest run-scorers in the tournament so far. Gill has scored 616 runs in 13 matches at an average of 47.38 and a strike rate of 161.67, while Sudharsan has scored 638 runs at an average of 49.08 and a strike rate of 157.92.“Absolutely, these three are going to play a very important role and one thing you mentioned, well you mentioned these three names, and it tells you that if you are very strong technically and also mentally, the three names, if you want to grade them, they are there. Mentally very strong and they can change the game depending on the format.“That’s what they have done. But you have to change according to the situation, according to the format and all three have done it.”The former India wicketkeeper-batsman also heaped praise on GT skipper Gill.Virat Kohli has done more in this than anyone else as he has played more than the two names you sent.“But the way Shubham Gill has played this season, I think that tells you how strong he is not only technically but also mentally and can change his game according to the situation and the format demands.”Big compliments to SirajDahiya gave special praise to GT pacer Mohammad Siraj, who has been one of the outstanding bowlers of the season.Siraj took 17 wickets in 14 matches this season and constantly troubled the batsmen with his variations and aggressive bowling.“One thing you said, the kind of character he is, putting all his energies into a cause.“I think it’s very important and he’s got a capable partner at the other end as well. The chemistry between the two is phenomenal not only on the field but also off the field. I think they understand each other, not just mentally, I think skill wise.“He understands the game very well, how the game is going and what I need to do, how I need to finish my overs to be my partner. Can start in a different way. I think that’s what stands out.”Dahiya also credited head coach Ashish Nehra for handling the bowling group brilliantly.“Usually when you talk about partnerships, it mostly goes with the batting, but I think their partnership is very good and Ashish Naira needs to be given a lot of credit, the way he handles both of them.“There are different pressures when they play for their different international teams, but they are both top-class bowlers and I think they do really, really well.”Dharamsala pitch and spin factorWith Dharamsala known for high-scoring encounters due to the height, Dahiya admitted that the spinners may not have a significant role to play.Dharamsala hosted three league stage matches this season and all of them turned out to be high-scoring contests, with teams regularly crossing the 200-run mark at the beautiful venue.RCB have already played one game this season, registering a 23-run win against Punjab Kings, while GT will play here for the first time this year.“I think it’s for everyone to see. It’s not just us. Ever since you start playing IPL games in Dharamsala or any game we’ve seen played here, at the height, we know there are more sixes here than any other ground.“Bangalore has a few, but that’s the thing here. I think it all comes down to dynamics, what kind of surface you get here, but you’re absolutely right. There’s not much of a role for spinners to play, but they come.”However, he backed veteran spinners from both camps to make an impact.“I think that’s the quality of spin in both sides. The spinners you have in both sides are two very intelligent spinners in both teams and I think whatever the surface, they will play their part.”
