The West Bengal government on Saturday announced that May 28 will be observed as a public holiday for Eid-ul-Azha, also known as Baqaraid, revising the state’s earlier holiday schedule following the latest moon sighting announcements. The decision came amid changes to the national calendar for the festival, which is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon.The revised notification effectively cancels the previously announced dates associated with the Eid holiday in the state. Officials said the move was taken to align the public holiday with the exact date of Eid celebrations in most parts of the country.

The change comes after religious authorities announced that the crescent moon for the beginning of Dhu al-Hijjah did not appear earlier than expected. As a result, Eid-ul-Adha will now be celebrated on May 28 instead of May 27 in many parts of India.The Center had also revised its holiday notification earlier this week, moving the Eid holiday for central government offices in Delhi from May 27 to May 28.

With the latest revision, government offices, educational institutions and several public institutions in West Bengal are expected to remain closed on May 28 for the festival. Banks and financial institutions may also observe closures depending on the regional holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India.This development has prompted the authorities to update administrative schedules and holiday notifications in all departments to avoid confusion among employees and the public.
