The West Bengal Government has revised its Eid holiday schedule and declared 28 May 2026 as an official public holiday for Eid-ul-Azha across the state. The decision has been taken after the latest information confirmed that the festival will now be celebrated on May 28 instead of the previously announced dates.A fresh notification issued by the state government said that the earlier holidays declared on May 26 and May 27 have been withdrawn. Both the days will now function as regular working days for the offices, institutes and institutions covered by the official notification.
Fresh notification issued after revised festival date
The state administration said that an order issued earlier in November 2025 had declared May 26 a day before Eid al-Zhaha and May 27 as a holiday for Eid al-Fitr celebrations. However, the revised moon sighting update changed the expected date of the festival, prompting the government to alter the holiday calendar. In the latest order, the governor approved May 28, which falls on a Thursday, on the occasion of Eid al-Zhaa (Baqaraid), as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881.The government said the amendment was necessary to ensure that the official holiday coincided with the actual day of the religious festival.
Earlier holidays were cancelled.
The notification clearly states that the holidays announced earlier on May 26 and May 27 have been cancelled. Consequently, government departments, educational institutions and other notified bodies will continue to function on both days. The revised announcement is expected to affect the administrative schedule of all departments, especially in schools, government offices and institutions that had already prepared for the holiday dates.Officials said that all concerned departments will be informed about the updated instructions to avoid confusion among employees and public.
Organizations announce schedule changes.
In the light of this revision, some institutions are bound to issue announcements regarding their new schedule for examinations, attendance and other work-related matters. Other financial institutions may do the same after listing state holidays. This clarification will help organizations understand that there will be only one official holiday on the occasion of this important festival. With the release of this revised list of holidays, May 28 will be declared as the only public holiday of Eid in West Bengal in the year 2026.
