Mel Gibson ‘The Resurrection of Christ’, the long-delayed follow-up to 2004’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’, has revealed the first look. The two-part biblical epic has wrapped filming after a 134-day shoot in Italy, but both films now have new release dates. ‘Part One’ opens on May 6, 2027, and ‘Part Two’ arrives on May 25, 2028.

Variety reports that production wrapped ahead of schedule after filming in Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi and Matera. Gibson also confirmed that the release plan has changed. “Part One” changed from March 26, 2027 to May 6, 2027. “Part Two” changed from May 6, 2027 to May 25, 2028.Both films will be released on Ascension Day, the Christian holiday that marks the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven.“I am deeply grateful to my incredibly talented cast and crew for pouring their hearts into this production. Together, we created something powerful,” said Gibson. “This film represents an important part of my life’s work, and it has demanded everything from me as a filmmaker and an artist. This is much more than a film for me. It is a mission I have had for more than 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.”

‘The Resurrection of Christ’ follows the ‘Passion of Christ’ in which he starred Jim Caviezel Jesus of Nazareth and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. The 2004 film focused on the last 12 hours before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.The focus of the new films will be revival. Gibson wrote the screenplay with Randall Wallace and has described it as an “acid trip”, saying he had “never read anything like it”.Jaakko Ohtonen and Mariela Garriga witness Jesus and Mary Magdalene. The cast includes Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio and Rupert Everett.“The Passion of the Christ” earned $610 million worldwide against a $30 million production budget. It held the R-rated box office record with $370 million, until Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” took in $636 million in 2024.Lionsgate will release the films in North America, the UK and Latin America through IDC. The studio has also established international partners in Germany, France, Spain, Benelux, Scandinavia, South Africa, Poland, Eastern Europe, Switzerland, Portugal, Baltics, Australia and New Zealand.Adam Fogelson, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, called Gibson “a true visionary with an artist’s eye for scale and an instinct for telling emotional truths.”
