Director Hari is said to have first approached Vijay for the film ‘Singam’. However, Vijay could not take up the project due to personal reasons. Later, the role went to Suriya, and the film was one of the biggest hits of 2010. Due to its success, several versions and sequels have been made in various languages such as Hindi and Punjabi.
