Aston Villa finally ended a three-decade wait for silverware as a superb display inspired by Uri Tillmans and Emiliano Buendia secured a dominant 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday. It was Villa’s first trophy since the 1996 League Cup and their first major European title since the club’s legendary European Cup triumph in 1982. A memorable night at Besiktas Stadium, Unai Emery put in a performance worthy of joining one of the club’s most famous teams.Tielemans broke Freiburg’s resistance with a thunderous volley late in the first half, before Buendia sensationally slotted home the second moments before the break. Morgan Rodgers added a third after half-time as Villa brushed aside the German side in style.
Emery’s Europa League magic strikes again
The victory further cemented Emery’s impressive reputation in the competition. The Spaniard has now won the Europa League five times, having previously won the trophy in 2014, 2015 and 2016 with Sevilla FC and in 2021 with Villarreal CF.Emery dismissed suggestions before the final that he was the “king” of the Europa League, but Villa’s latest European triumph only cemented that legacy. The celebrations in Istanbul were matched by emotional scenes among Villa supporters, with around 20,000 fans turning the stadium into a sea of celebration. Club legends from the famous 1982 side, including Peter Withey and Dennis Mortimer, watched from the stands as Villa created another historic chapter.Even Prince William and Hollywood actors Tom HanksBoth prominent Villa fans joined in the celebrations.

Aston Villa: From early season struggles to European glory
Villa’s victory completed a stunning turnaround from a disastrous start to the season. Emery’s side went six games without a win at the start of the campaign and scored just twice during that run.But his fortunes changed dramatically in Europe. The victory against Bologna FC 1909 sparked an impressive trip to the Europa League in which Villa won 13 of their 15 matches in the competition. The final itself perfectly captured Villa’s confidence and attacking flair. Rodgers was first to be instrumental in delivering the cross that allowed Tielemans to smash home from inside the area in the 41st minute. If that strike sparked Villa’s celebrations, Buendia’s closing moments later sent them into a frenzy. Given space outside the box, the Argentine curled a superb shot into the far corner.Rodgers then capped an unforgettable night in the 58th minute, sliding in to convert Buendia’s cross and sparking jubilant scenes among the traveling support. For a club that has endured bans, failed finals and decades of frustration, the long wait is finally over.
