New Delhi: Mumbai Indians go into the clash against Kolkata Knight Riders without the pressure of qualification after already being out of the race for the IPL 2026 playoffs. With nothing to lose, the five-time champions were expected to play an aggressive brand of cricket at Eden Gardens. Instead, their batting unit collapsed under pressure as not a single batsman managed to cross the 35-run mark. After being asked to bat first, MI suffered an early defeat. Ryan Rickelton was out for 6 runs, Naman Dhir fell for a wicket, while Rohit Sharma and Surya Kumar Yadav managed just 15 runs. As the wickets fell quickly, the onus fell on them. Tilak Verma To stabilize the innings and revive Mumbai’s hopes of posting a competitive total. However, the left-hander endured an abysmal off-day, crawling to 20 off 32 balls at a strike rate of just 62.50.In the process, Tilak registered an unloved IPL record that remained untouched for 14 years. The last batsman to face 30 or more balls in an IPL innings was Michael Hussey who scored 19 off 32 balls for Chennai Super Kings against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur in May 2012 at a strike rate of 59.37.Tilak, despite this disappointing outing, has enjoyed an overall strong IPL 2026 season. In 13 matches so far, he has scored 356 runs at an average of 32.36 and a strike rate of 148.95, including one century and two fifties. But against KKR, the attacking batsman known to single-handedly change games, never got the momentum.KKR’s bowlers maintained constant pressure throughout the innings. Sunil Narine, Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey led the charge with discipline to restrict MI to 147/8.Green removed Rickelton early, while Dubey struck twice in quick succession to dismiss Rohit and Surya Kumar. Rohit hit two sixes during his 15-ball stay, while Surya Kumar’s brief cameo of 15 off six balls ended when Dube bowled him.Tilak and skipper Hardik Pandya tried to rebuild the 43-run partnership, but neither batsman could break free at a level that would help the bowlers. Tilak was caught by Anukul Roy off Karthik Tyagi, while Hardik’s 27 off 26 balls was bowled by Narine. Will Jacks added a quick 14 before being run out by Rinku Singh and Varun Chakraborty. The only late flourish came from Corbin Bosch, who was unbeaten on 32 off 18 balls with three fours and two sixes. Deepak Chahar also scored 10 runs in seven balls to help MI recover a bit at the end.Among the bowlers, Dubey and Green took two wickets each, while Tyagi also picked up a couple of wickets. Narine once again proved decisive with a miserable spell of 1/13 in four overs.
