‘Rick and Morty’ is headed for a feature film as Warner Bros. develops an animated film based on the hit Adult Swim series. Jacob Hair, the show’s longtime director, is in talks to direct the project. The film is still in early development, and the studio has yet to share plot details. The move comes as the Emmy-winning series gears up for its ninth season and continues to be renewed for a 12th season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jacob Hair is in talks to direct the ‘Rick and Morty’ movie for Warner Bros. Hair has directed episodes of the Adult Swim series since 2019, and now serves as the show’s executive producer. InSneider first reported his involvement.Creator of the series Dan Harmon He also confirmed Hair’s role in an interview with CinemaBlend on Tuesday. Harmon said the group did not seek a director outside of the show. “Jacob Hair is the director. We didn’t shop around,” he said.The animated film does not yet have a release date. Warner Bros. has also kept the story. The series follows inventor Rick Sanchez and his teenage grandson Morty as they travel across universes and deal with strange, dangerous and often chaotic situations.

Harmon and Justin Roiland co-created ‘Rick and Morty’, which premiered in 2013. The show has won Emmys and has been the most-watched comedy on basic cable in recent seasons. A spin-off called “President Curtis” will also premiere soon on Adult Swim, starring Keith David.In 2023, Adult Swim cut ties with Roiland over allegations of domestic abuse, which were later dismissed. Roiland voiced Rick and Morty before reprising their roles.Harmon previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he had discussed a version of the film with Warner Bros. executives and was feeling hopeful. “My philosophy would be to do a Rick and Morty adventure, spend a little extra money and make it last 90 minutes,” he said.He added, “Not to try to earn its feature status through canonical dramatic tone changes or anything like that, but to make it a really bad episode of Rick and Morty.”Harmon also said that Zack Snyder once offered to help start the film. Snyder later appeared as himself in the series’ eighth season.
