Disha PataniSister Khushboo Patani, a former Indian Army officer, has expressed her anger and concern over the recent dowry-related deaths of Twisha Sharma and Deepika Nagar. Through a series of emotional Instagram stories, Khushbu challenged society’s expectations of marriage and criticized the pressure women often face to stay in difficult relationships. Her remarks quickly gained traction online over dowry practices, marriage rules and abuse that families sometimes encourage women to remain silent on.Faced with the incident, Khushbu wrote, “Dahez ki aag mein jalti har beti ki khabar ek sawal chor jati hai, kya sach mein shaadi itni zaruri thi? (Every news of a daughter burnt in the fire of dowry leaves behind a question, was marriage really so necessary?)”She also reflected on the social conditioning that women experience from childhood, where marriage is often presented as a necessity rather than an option.Sharing another post, she wrote, “Samaj bachpan se sikhata hai ‘Ek umra ke baad shaadi kar lo…’ ‘Akeli ladki achi nahi lagti…’ ‘Log kya kahenge?'” She further added, “But nobody taught us that living alone is an art. Being happy with yourself is also a way of life.”In another strongly worded post, Khushbu pointed out that the responsibility in such situations does not always rest with the abusive in-laws.He wrote, “Aaj jitney zimmedar galat saas sasur hote hain, utni hi kayi baar chup rehne wale maa baap bhi hote hain.”According to her, many women who try to share struggles with their parents after marriage are often told to compromise rather than withdraw from toxic situations. She highlighted how phrases that encourage women to “fit in” are repeatedly used even when faced with emotional or harmful situations.Khushbu also asked women to shun marriages where dowry becomes a condition. In one of his publications he wrote: “If it comes down to having the courage to live alone and say no to marriage. Fight the right battle. Marna nahi hain, Maarna hai!”He continued with another touching message, pointing out how daughters often don’t just get married, but are slowly sacrificed to society’s expectations. Khushbook added, “Dahej kam tha shayad, isliye har roz apmaan hui thi.”Ending on a personal note, she described herself as “Your sister, born to be single,” referring to her views on marriage.Besides being the sister of actress Disha Patani, Khushboo Patani is an ex-officer in the Indian Army who reportedly retired with the rank of Major.
