CBSE reduced re-evaluation charges after OSM examination; Students will get answer scripts for Rs.100.
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Sunday announced a revised and significantly reduced fee structure for re-evaluation services as questions continue to arise over the on-screen marking (OSM) introduced in this year’s board evaluation process.He announced this while addressing the press conference. The ministry said the move is aimed at reducing anxiety among students seeking to verify or revise their marks after their 10th and 12th results.Under the revised structure, students will now have to pay Rs 100 for accessing scanned copies of their answer scripts and another Rs 100 for verification of marks. Correction requests will cost Rs 25 per question. Earlier, students had to pay Rs 700 to access the answer sheet, Rs 500 to verify marks, and Rs 100 for each question challenged.‘Elimination of total error’: Education ministry defends on-screen marking amid Class 12 result rowThe board has also decided to refund the entire fee paid by the student in case of increase in marks after re-examination or verification process.“We will charge a fee of Rs 100 from any student who wants to see their answer sheet; a separate fee of Rs 100 is applicable if they want to verify their papers; and a fee of Rs 25 is applicable for re-checking the answer to a particular question,” Kumar said.“We have decided that, if during the re-examination process, a student’s marks increase or are revised, we will refund the entire amount paid by them for the re-examination,” he added.

The revised fee comes at a time when CBSE’s digital assessment model is facing criticism from students and parents, particularly over concerns over transparency, scanning quality and discrepancies in marking.Seeking to allay these concerns, Kumar said the press conference was specifically called by the ministry “to address the anxiety among students about OSM.”He said the digital assessment framework was not a sudden change and was planned in 2014 before being reintroduced this year after preparation and training exercises.
Around 98 lakh answer sheets were scanned.
According to officials, around 98 lakh answer sheets were scanned and converted into PDF before being digitally shared with the evaluators. CBSE said that a three-level security mechanism was used during scanning to ensure that no page is missed and all answer sheets remain legible.Kumar said, “When there is an online digital system, the marking scheme is also decided.The training of evaluators for the new system began in April last year using the previous year’s question papers, officials said.The ministry also pointed to other institutions that already use similar digital assessment systems, including Delhi University, Mumbai University, Chartered Accountancy Examinations and the International Baccalaureate Board.
More than 13,000 answer sheets were physically reviewed.
At the same time, officials admitted that more than 13,000 answer scripts could not be scanned due to problems related to accuracy of handwriting and ink. Instead these papers were physically examined.“The welfare and concern of all our children is of utmost importance to us,” Kumar said.“Therefore, we want to ensure that no child, for any reason, feels that he has scored low marks on the basis of his aptitude or actual performance in the answers written during the examination,” he added.The board’s latest move is aimed at alleviating immediate concerns about access to answer sheets and the affordability of the re-examination process. However, the big question is whether the revised fee structure will also reduce the growing mistrust that some students have expressed over the digital marking system itself.
