Dharamsala: Discussions all around Shreyas IyerA return to the Indian T20I squad has moved out of the realm of “what if” and into the realm of “when”. As the BCCI selectors look ahead to the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, the conversation is no longer about sentimental memories. It is about rewarding one of the most complete individual campaigns of IPL-2026.But then there’s also the tendency to let team results swallow individual narratives, and that’s where Err currently occupies. On pure batting output, his IPL season has been one of the most assured. He has so far scored 396 runs in 12 matches at an average of 49.50 and a strike rate of 164.32. He has five fifties to his name, four of which came in winning cases.But T20 captaincy is a fruitless business, and the Punjab Kings’ slide into a losing streak has inevitably lost the luster of their partnership.Not that Ayer’s influence has diminished in isolation. Rather, it risks resetting. In a format where pace defines the narrative, individual consistency often needs to be the platform for team success to be fully appreciated. Now, Punjab’s campaign has reached a point where Iyer’s role should be expanded. From being the team’s most reliable batsman, he also needs to be a driver of results.Equality is tough. Wins in the last two league games against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Supergiants not only keep the playoff hopes alive for Punjab. They also restore context to Iyer’s season, turning it from a statistically strong run to a productive one. Fail there, and the numbers may still stand up, but the season may be remembered as one that promised more than it delivered.Iyer’s season with the Punjab Kings has been a masterclass in middle-order management, effectively silencing critics who once doubted his mettle. In a league where brevity and brute force are often seen as the ultimate hallmarks of “impact,” Iyer has defined the term through sheer consistency and a newfound ability to chase down speed.The hallmark of Iyer’s season has been his “calming presence” at the crease. He has not only scored runs, he has controlled some of the most difficult phases of the match at the crease. For a Punjab team that has often struggled with the middle innings collapse, Iyer has been the tactical heartbeat, anchoring the team through long targets and pressure-cooker situations.The stats also reflect a batsman in his prime. Balancing a high average with a strike rate that has kept opposition bowlers under constant pressure this year, Iyer has proven that he can play the “finisher-anchor” role that India currently lack in the shortest format.Former India head coach Ravi Shastri summed it up succinctly during his broadcast stint. “Iyer is playing old-school T20 cricket, but with a modern awareness. He’s not blindly chasing strike-rate; he’s chasing control and that’s winning Punjab games,” Shastri said. It’s a subtle distinction, but one that defined Air’s season.There is also a clear evolution in how he negotiates his historical weakness for fast and short balls. He hasn’t eliminated it, but he’s managed it better. By choosing his moments to attack and, more importantly, his breaks, Iyer has avoided the kind of dismissals that once derailed his innings.Speaking on a post-match show, former Australia captain Aaron Finch said, “You look at Iyer and you don’t see panic. He is underrated in T20Is. He gives the feeling that even if the game is flowing, there is a plan.”The numbers, especially during the chase, tell the story of evolution. Against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede in mid-April, Punjab were chasing 196, a tall order by any metric. Chasing the target for Punjab, Iyer gave a masterclass in calculated risk with a 35-ball 66.He repeated the feat with a 36-ball 71 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, reminding everyone that he can bat in different gears while chasing the target.Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Iyer scored an unbeaten 69 off 33 to lead Punjab to a six-wicket win in New Chandigarh. Earlier in the tournament too, he played a crucial innings of 50 off 29 to help Punjab chase down 210 in Chennai and win by five wickets.According to Punjab’s spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutole, the team’s chasing skills this season is due to Iyer’s clarity of vision. “He understands the situation, takes it deep, and mixes the attack while building partnerships,” Bahotole said.Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said “Just the fact that he keeps it simple, like how it’s done in your street or at your tennis ball game at home. It’s amazing. And I think the way he’s batting, he’s growing into a leader that players look up to, which is a lethal combination.”“He is very aware of what his perceived weaknesses have been over the years,” Punjab Kings bowling coach James Hoopes said. “Once he finds his way back into the Indian T20I team, you will see what kind of batsman he is going to be for the rest of his career.”
