Mariah Carey’s 2001 film ‘Glitter’ may not have spread her magic, but the film holds a special place in her heart. The film, which hit theaters just 11 days after the horrific 9/11 attacks, was Mariah’s acting debut. Now, the singer-songwriter has revealed that new plans for ‘Glitter’ are underway.

In a recent interview with Variety, Mariah, 56, was asked about the film’s 25th anniversary. Noting that the film has disappeared from streaming services in the past month, Carey has confirmed that something is in the works. “(There are) plans to do a deluxe and a reissue, or maybe just one, I don’t know. We’re getting over it. I’m really excited,” he shared.
‘Glitter’ was released at a difficult time
The film, based on Carey’s life story, was released on September 21, 2001, 10 days after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington DC and in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Despite the anticipation surrounding Carey’s acting debut, the film struggled at the box office. According to IMDB, ‘Glitter’ has earned just US$5.3 million worldwide.

Over the years, the singer himself has spoken candidly about the disappointment he felt during that period. Reflecting on the film’s initial reception, Carey told Variety, “I hated it. I was like, ‘Why did I do that?’ ” describing the project as a “disastrous flop” that came at a particularly challenging stage in his life.“And then, you know, it became something that I really loved, and it kind of took over,” she continued.
How fans are reviving ‘Glitter’
However, ‘Glitter’ has experienced an unexpected cultural revival. In recent years, fans have flocked to appreciate the film and its soundtrack. The viral #JusticeForGlitter movement in 2018 led to the soundtrack reaching the iTunes Top 10 albums chart, 17 years after its release.
