Dua Lipa’s lawsuit for $15 million
The ‘New Rules’ singer recently sued Samsung Electronics for $15 million for using her image to sell TVs without her permission. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, alleging that the packaging was “designed to take unfair advantage of Ms. Lipa’s hard-earned success in promoting and selling Samsung’s products,” according to the BBC. Also, the image was taken during the 2024 Austin City Limits Festival performance and the ‘Don’t Start Now’ singer owns the copyright to the image. The document highlights two comments on Instagram that suggested they were going to buy the TV set because the box features a photo of Lipa. Dua Lipa’s petition against AI models
With the ‘Training Season’ singer making headlines for using her likeness without permission, it’s not the first time Dua Lipa has called out a tech giant. Last year, the singer signed a petition to the UK government seeking protection against AI Bots and models, along with 400 other artists, including Sir Elton John, Florence Welch, Paul McCartney and more. The open letter was addressed to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer. Calling for protection of AI models, updating copyright laws, 400 British artists said failure would mean “giving away” their work. “We are the creators of wealth, we reflect and promote national stories, we are the innovators of the future, and AI needs us as much as it needs energy and IT skills,” the letter stated, according to the BBC. However, not everyone agrees with the terms and conditions. Julia Willemyns, co-founder of British Progress, shared that the measures will not stop foreign films from using their content and work. “A restrictive copyright regime would offshore AI development, chill domestic innovation and directly harm the UK economy,” he said.
